Tuckpointing

Pictured below is a typical situation found on many masonry buildings. A structure crack off of a window or door. Cracks found on masonry structures typically occur when settling takes place. The weakest areas on masonry walls are openings such as windows and doors, so naturally this is where the masonry fails, causing cracking to occur. Tuckpointing, not caulking, is the correct fix.

Using a pointers hoc and a tuckpointing tool, mortar is packed into cleaned joints. With different dyes, aggregates, and cements proper mortar color and textures are achieved to match exsisting mortar joints as closely as possible. Properly matched tuckpointed joints should eventually blend with adjacent masonry. Tooling, or finishing the joint with a "S" or barrel jointer to match surrounding masonry joints is also important in achieving a good match.
